I’ve lost count of how many smart data engineers I’ve seen stall their careers by being too helpful. They think saying yes makes them reliable. What it really makes them is invisible.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe in helping people. That’s part of the job.
But if you don’t filter which problems are worth solving, you spend your best hours on quick fixes no one remembers while the real projects rot in backlog.
And here’s the thing: once you stop chasing every request, you finally get to work on the things that move your career forward and give you the freedom you actually want.
Saying yes too often turns you into the office service desk
The fastest way to stall your career in data engineering is to become the person who says yes to every random request.
“Can you fix this broken dashboard?” “Can you backfill that table?” “Can you help me pull this one-off report?”
You tell yourself it will only take ten minutes. By the end of the week, you’ve lost ten hours.
I’ve watched (and was) senior engineers who should be shaping the architecture of the whole platform get reduced to Slack support. Their pipeline redesigns sit half-finished while they run around patching jobs and answering ad-hoc queries.
It’s not engineering anymore. It’s babysitting.
And here’s the problem. Once people learn you’ll always jump in, they stop respecting your time. You’re not the engineer who drives strategic projects, you’re the service desk that keeps the lights on.
If you’re always available, you’re not valuable. You’re replaceable.
The real cost isn’t promotion, it’s losing the work you actually want to do
The obvious risk of being too helpful is missing a promotion. But the bigger cost is you never touch the work that actually matters to the business or to you.
I’ve watched senior engineers sink months into firefighting:
backfilling tables because upstream teams keep breaking contracts,
duct-taping pipelines so a daily dashboard doesn’t fail before the exec meeting,
rewriting messy queries from product managers who didn’t know what they were asking for.
None of it is wasted in the short term. The business keeps running. People are unblocked. You get a pat on the back.
But six months later, you realize the project you actually wanted to build, the reliable event model, the new data platform, the automation that would free the whole team, never even got started.
And here’s where it stings the most: those big projects are the ones leadership notices.
Nobody remembers the 40 “quick fixes” you shipped. They remember the one system that reduced reporting time by 80%. They remember the migration that cut costs in half. They remember the strategic bets, not the Slack favors.
For contractors, the trap is even more brutal. The client hires you with the idea of building a system.
But you say yes to every request, so instead of acting like an expert, you look like a short-term resource. The bigger vision dies. You walk away with a mediocre solution on your resume and zero leverage for the next contract.

By Friday, you’re exhausted, but what do you actually have to show? A few dashboards didn’t blow up. A couple of people got unblocked. Useful, sure. But nothing anyone will remember a month from now.
Now picture the opposite:
You invest that same time in stabilising your data models so the tables don’t break in the first place.
You redesign the pipeline that used to collapse every other week.
You automate the manual jobs that eat everyone’s time.
Suddenly, every team is moving faster, not just today but every day after. That’s work that lasts. That’s work people notice.
And here’s the kicker: when you choose the right projects, you make the business better and your own life better. You get back the energy to build systems you’re proud of. You create space to think about the next big challenge instead of drowning in small ones.
This isn’t about saying no. It’s about saying yes to the work that creates a better future. For your team, for the business, and for you.
Once you stop being reactive, you unlock the life you actually want
It’s Monday morning and instead of waking up to a dozen Slack pings about broken dashboards, your phone is quiet. The team handled it.
Last month you invested in the system that prevents failures before they happen. People trust the setup now, so they don’t need you firefighting every hour.
By Wednesday, you’re not buried in SQL cleanups. You’re in a product strategy meeting.
The VP is asking for your input because the data roadmap you proposed is now driving how the company measures growth. You’re speaking in terms of churn, retention, revenue and people are listening.
On Friday, instead of rushing to close Jira tickets, you’re reviewing work from two junior engineers who finally have space to grow under your guidance.
You’re not the service desk anymore, but the leader shaping the direction.
And when you shut your laptop that evening, you’re not exhausted from putting out fires. You’re proud, because you worked on something that actually moves the company forward.
You can step away for the weekend without worrying everything will collapse. And that feeling is worth more than any promotion.
A simple framework makes the trade-offs clear
Here’s the truth:
You don’t get to your future by accident. You get there because you make different choices about where your time goes.
And the only way to do that consistently is with a filter.
Last week I shared the framework I use: Impact, Influence, Visibility. It’s not theory. It’s a lens that lets you look at any request and see if it’s worth your time.
Picture this. You get a Slack ping: “Can you pull a quick report on campaign performance?” Ten minutes of work, maybe. But run it through the filter. Low impact, low visibility, zero influence. It doesn’t make the cut.
Now imagine a different request. “Can you help us stabilise the metrics before the board meeting next week?” High visibility, big impact, a chance to influence how the business sees performance. That one deserves your attention.
The framework doesn’t just protect your calendar. It gives you language. Instead of being the person who says “no” all the time, you’re the person who says, “Here’s where my time creates the most value.”
People respect that. And over time, they come to expect it.
That’s how you stop being the office service desk. That’s how you become the engineer who works on the projects that matter.
Every yes is a trade, so start trading up
Every time you say yes, you’re making a trade. You give away an hour, a day, sometimes a whole week.
The question is whether you’re trading it for a quick favor no one will remember, or for the kind of work that shapes your career and the future of the business.
Senior engineers don’t get stuck because they lack skill. They get stuck because they spend their skill in the wrong places. They burn it on patches, hotfixes, and favors instead of on the projects that change how the company runs.
Your time is the most expensive resource in the room. Treat it that way.
This week, pick one task and run it through the framework. Ask yourself: does this work have impact, influence, and visibility? If not, stop trading down. Start trading up.
